Brownmill Company brought the party with them at SEE/KNOW for their new collection release. The store was packed with wonderful people, DJ Yatta played some absolute classics, and SEE/KNOW family member, Andre Molina, was shaking up Caribeño cocktails for everyone with flavorful Ten To One Rum on Friday and Saturday night. While the party was going strong, we took a second away to enjoy the crisp winter air and chill with CEO and Creative Director,Justis Pitt Goodson.
Justis is a Jersey boy, born in Piscataway and keeping close to his roots by currently residing in Newark. He was an entrepreneur from a young age, selling sneakers, candy and even cutting his friend’s hair for money. “I just loved the idea of being able to get good at something, or creative at something and be able to sell it, and be a value to [people]” he says.
He taught himself how to sew in eighth grade with his former tutor’s sewing machine. It started off with bowties, following his “preppy stage” in school, and then he learned to do much more. Once he met current COO /Head of Design, Taha Shimou, and CFO/ Head of Business Development, Kwaku Agyemang in high school, Justis knew they were going to be business partners for life. BrownMill Company has a beautifully “organic” story where the creators grew from “boys to men” together through the development of the brand.
The name of the brand comes from Justis’ grandparents. “Brown” being his grandfather’s middle name, and “Mill” stemming from his grandmother’s first name, Mildred. He wanted to “pay homage to their legacy” as he was very close to them.
While BrownMill Company might be a clothing brand, Justice says, “our product is really ‘impact’”,and clothes are the way they’re going to get there. He wants to create that impact by “seeing people win.”
The style of BrownMill Co. is a mix of preppy and street and a means of expressing heritage, black history, world unity, and culture. This new collection is a perfect representation of “them”. A really exciting event that the brand has coming up is the first “Think Bigger” conference in Newark, NJ, so that they can do exactly what the brand is reaching for: creating impact.
It was an amazing time hanging out with the BrownMill Company team, and we’re so excited to see the impact they leave on the world, and so grateful that we were able to be a small part of it.
