A few weeks ago, we hosted The New Blue Collar’s latest drop at our store. It was a super successful event that gave us our first look at designers Alex Ewings and Felix Llanos’ new “Maintenance Man”, the new logo that was plastered over most of their garments. We were able to get to know Alex and Felix a bit more after the event, and here’s what they said:
Where are you from?
Alex—I was born in Texas and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Felix— Born and raised in Queens, NY.
When did you start TNBC?
We launched TNBC in September 2019.
What got you into creating TNBC?
We worked in a fast-paced environment that required us to commute throughout the city. We often hung out with friends after work and quickly realized just how important it was to possess versatile staples and not just a lot of "clothes." We understood that working men and women don't just look different than they did in the past. What they do, where they go, and what they do in between has also changed—hence the name The New Blue Collar.
What would you say is TNBC's style?
TNBC's style is timeless. It's elevated but functional and versatile. We aim to make everyday products for real people doing real-life things.
What else do you like to do in your free time?
Alex— I love spending time with family and friends.
Felix— I would have to agree with Al. My wife and I just welcomed our first baby, so most of my time is spent with them. I’ll hang out with some family and friends in any other free time.
What would you be doing if you weren't pursuing TNBC?
Alex—Hmmm… Good question. Honestly, I don't know. I'm very happy doing everything that I'm doing now. There's so much that I'm pursuing within what I'm already doing. So that's where my focus is if that makes sense. Sorry, I know that was a boring answer, hah.
Felix— That is a tough one, given that there are still so many things we’re still pursuing with TNBC, as Al said. I would have to say working with other brands and finding ways to help them grow. It feels like that’s what I do now with TNBC, but to work with some ambitious creators chasing their dreams, would be the next best thing.
What are your future goals?
Alex—To be retired by 40 or 50 something and living on a ranch somewhere with my family.
Felix— Not to be cheesy, but I'd like to live long enough to see my kids live out their dreams.
How would you describe your personal fashion sense?
Alex—Easy. I feel like I'm dressed just right for every occasion. Never overdressed, but never underdressed.
Felix— Cozy. Nothing like being able to be comfortable wherever I am.
Can you tell us about TNBC's new Maintenance Man?
The Maintenance Man is the perfect representation of the brand. We wanted to introduce something that not only embodies the brand, but when you see it, you know right away that's TNBC. Similar to the Polo horse or the Nike swoosh. We want to be able to place him on a garment with no type, and right away, you know it's us. He'll make it much easier for us to bring that high-low look and feel to our products moving forward.
Is there a new collection in the works?
There is! But, we can't announce it just yet due to legal. Stay tuned!
If you could wear any piece from TNBC everyday, which one would it be?
Alex—The Weekday Cap. Easy.
Felix— Our new Maintenance and Repair hoodie is my favorite. My most worn piece so far. You can dress it up or down; however you like.
